We moved to Spain in May 2005 living in Sabanillas just a few miles up the east coast from Gibraltar. There were no dojo facilities available so we used to train on the concrete roof of the house and looking back we must have been mad at times, 30 degrees C in the shade but it kept us fit and in touch with the system. Moving to Ibiza in August of 2005 we were able to train in better surroundings because karate is very strong on the island with an overall shotokan membership of several hundred. We were able to train with a local club in Sta. Eulalia for nearly 8 months and feel that the new experience really helped us appreciate the Keibudo system. In February of 2006 I was approached by the parents association of Morna International College, the school where both Talei and Joy were attending, and having discussed what they would like to see I agreed to start a club using an area of school property as a dojo, the nursery playground, yes we were in the open for the rest of 2006 and although at times the weather was not kind to us we appreciated the fresh air.
April 2007 was historic for the club because we had our first seminar and first grading with the Chief Instructor. September of 2007 was a special time for us because we found a permanent dojo within a sports complex which really suited our needs, so much so that our second seminar and grading followed in November. It was at this time I attained my Black Belt 2nd Dan and with Talei already a Black Belt 2nd Dan we form a good training team with Joy well on the way being a Brown Belt 3rd Kyu. Keibudo Karate Ibiza consists of seven different nationalities who speak 8 different languages between them.
We are now looking forward to the Chief Instructor and Sensei Mandy visiting us in May for our 3rd seminar and grading.
When Talei started training in May of 2000 and myself in December of the same year it was very obvious to us that Sensei Keith Boardman was the right choice and although the system we were then in was different the instructor remains the same to this day, that is the reason why when the opportunity to open a karate club on this beautiful island came to us, Keibudo karate was the obvious choice because we knew the system and had complete faith and support in and from the Chief Instructor. I only have one regret and that is this, when we need to ask a question concerning a set movement or kata we have to call 1500 miles to Sensei Keith, unlike being able to see him at any time face to face, so we hope that any UK members reading this fully appreciate both the availability of the system and the man.
